Doherty Evans & Stott, Manchester

Doherty Evans & Stott

I was in Manchester a weekend or two ago for a conference, and while exploring the city I happened upon this rather nice independent gentlemen’s outfitters called Doherty Evens & Stott. Located on Bridge Street this retailer offers a beautifully executed range of luxury shirts, suits, jackets, trousers, knits and accessories to their own design and under their own label. In totality they form a perfect core wardrobe of items that are classically styled with enough updating and original touches to provide just the right measure of modernity. I’d say the aesthetic was a perfect fusion of English and Italian styling. Added to this they offer a made to measure service which starts from £1200.

The combination of qualities exhibited by Doherty Evans & Stott is hardly surprising though, given the background of the founders Andrew (whom I met), Matthew (who was serving customers) and Thomas. Having begun their menswear journey in the employ of Gieves and Hawkes they worked in the shops concession in local department store House of Fraser. Four years ago they were then made redundant after a reorganisation and this moment prompted them to create their own label –I love these kinds of stories. Four years later things are going strong and there is a discernable individual character to what’s on offer –particularly in the form of the knitwear.

The clothes are manufactured in both Italy and the UK and use both English and Italian cloths. The cuts are trim. Lines are available online but if you find yourself in Manchester it’s definitely worth a look.
